Hospitals in the Gaza strip are “at breaking point”, the World Health Organization has warned, saying time was “running out to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe”.

Israel, which controls all supplies to the hemmed-in territory, has placed the strip under complete siege. Gaza’s power plant stopped working on Wednesday, and hospitals, said the WHO, are forced to ration “depleting fuel reserves”.

“The impact would be devastating for the most vulnerable patients, including the injured who need life-saving surgery, patients in intensive care units, and newborns depending on care in incubators,” it said.

The health body has documented 34 attacks on healthcare workers since last Saturday, with 11 deaths among health workers on duty.
