The head of the World Health Organization has called for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying that the communications blackout is making it impossible for ambulances to reach injured people.

“We are still out of touch with our staff and health facilities. I’m worried about their safety,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a post on X on Saturday morning.

He added that the intense bombardment meant that it was not possible for people to find shelter in the enclave.

“[The World Health Organization] appeals to all those who have the power to push for a ceasefire to act NOW,” said Ghebreyesus.

In a statement, the WHO said: “Reports of bombardment near the Indonesia and Al Shifa hospitals are gravely concerning . . . Hospitals across Gaza are already operating at maximum capacity due to the injuries sustained in weeks of unrelenting bombardment, and are  unable to absorb a dramatic rise in the number of patients”.
